Job Description: Criminal Law Paralegal
Position Overview:
The Criminal Law Paralegal will provide comprehensive support to attorneys in the Criminal Law department. This role requires a strong understanding of criminal law practices, procedures, and legal terminology. The Criminal Law Paralegal will be responsible for conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, managing case files, and assisting in trial preparation. The successful candidate will possess exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal research on case law, statutes, regulations, and legal articles relevant to criminal law matters.
- Assist attorneys in preparing legal documents, including briefs, motions, pleadings, and discovery requests.
- Organize and maintain case files, ensuring all relevant documents and correspondence are accurately filed and easily accessible.
- Prepare subpoenas, summonses, and other legal documents for service.
- Coordinate with external stakeholders, such as court personnel, clients, witnesses, and experts, to obtain necessary information and documentation.
- Assist in the preparation of trial exhibits, trial binders, and other trial-related materials.
- Attend and assist attorneys during client interviews, depositions, hearings, and trials.
- Review and analyze legal documents, such as police reports, witness statements, and medical records, to extract pertinent information for case preparation.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of client information and adhere to ethical standards.
- Stay updated on changes in criminal law, legal procedures, and relevant legislation.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
- Proven experience working as a Paralegal, preferably in the field of criminal law.
- In-depth knowledge of criminal law practices, procedures, and legal terminology.
- Familiarity with legal research methods and resources, such as LexisNexis or Westlaw.
- Strong proficiency in using legal software and case management systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks efficiently.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with integrity.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, clients, and colleagues.
